FC Metz Women 1-2 Le Havre Women: Visitors Clinch Narrow Victory in French Women's League Clash

Le Havre Women secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over FC Metz Women on September 26, 2026, in a French women's league fixture that delivered drama and intensity from start to finish. The away side's clinical finishing proved the difference in a match where both teams created opportunities, but Le Havre's ability to convert at key moments earned them all three points.

Match Overview

The game, played at Metz's home ground, saw the hosts start brightly, pressing high and looking to take an early lead. However, Le Havre absorbed the pressure and struck first against the run of play. Metz responded with urgency, equalizing before half-time to set up a tense second half. The decisive moment came in the 67th minute when Le Havre regained the lead, and despite late pressure from Metz, the visitors held on for a valuable win.

This result marks an important step for Le Havre in their league campaign, while Metz are left to rue missed chances. The three points lift Le Havre up the table, while Metz remain in search of consistency.

Key Moments

• 12th minute: Le Havre take the lead. A quick counter-attack ends with a low strike into the bottom corner, silencing the home crowd.
• 34th minute: Metz equalize. A well-worked move down the left flank results in a close-range finish, sending the teams into the break level.
• 67th minute: Le Havre retake the lead. A corner kick is only half-cleared, and a powerful volley from the edge of the box finds the net.
• 85th minute: Metz nearly equalize again, but Le Havre's goalkeeper produces a spectacular save to deny a header from six yards.

Tactical Story

Metz lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, aiming to dominate possession and use their wingers to stretch Le Havre's defence. They enjoyed 58% of the ball and completed more passes in the final third, but their inability to convert chances proved costly. Le Havre, on the other hand, set up in a compact 4-4-2, sitting deep and looking to hit on the break. Their defensive discipline and rapid transitions were key to their success. Le Havre's midfield duo effectively shielded the back four, limiting Metz to mostly long-range efforts.

Standout Players

For Le Havre, the attacking midfielder Océane Martin was instrumental, providing the assist for the opening goal and constantly probing. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a match-winning save late on. Metz's captain, Clara Dumont, was a driving force in midfield, dictating play and scoring the equalizer. However, her efforts were not enough to secure a positive result.

Season Impact

With this win, Le Havre Women climb to a more comfortable position in the French women's league standings, boosting their confidence ahead of a challenging run of fixtures. For Metz, the defeat leaves them hovering near the lower half of the table, and they will need to improve their finishing if they hope to climb. The reverse fixture later in the season will be an opportunity for revenge.
