Antela FC claimed one of the most eye-catching results of the Spanish Tercera División RFEF weekend, winning 3-2 away at CD Arenteiro after a five-goal thriller that swung one way and then the other.
The visitors from Xinzo de Limia led for long spells, absorbed a late siege and held on for three precious points against one of the best-supported sides in their group. For Arenteiro, it was a frustrating afternoon in front of their own supporters: two goals scored at home and still nothing to show for it.
Derby day in the province of Ourense
Few fixtures in this division carry as much local flavour as Arenteiro against Antela. Both clubs come from the interior of Ourense province, separated by roughly half an hour of road, and the fixture has become a genuine provincial derby since Antela's rise through the Galician regional pyramid.
Arenteiro, based in O Carballiño, are a club with a proud identity and a following that regularly fills the Municipal de Espiñedo, giving them one of the more intimidating home atmospheres in the group. Antela, whose name comes from the Lagoa de Antela that once covered the land around Xinzo de Limia, arrived with a point to prove and a game plan clearly designed for the occasion.
How the match unfolded
Antela started the brighter of the two sides and got their reward early. A well-worked move down the right ended with a low cross into the penalty area, and the visitors' centre-forward got in front of his marker to turn the ball home at the near post.
Arenteiro responded the way a home side should. Growing into the contest as the half wore on, they began to dominate possession and equalised before the interval, a set-piece routine that ended with the ball being bundled in from close range after a scramble in the six-yard box.
The second half, though, belonged to Antela. Within minutes of the restart they restored their lead, punishing a loose pass in midfield with a direct counter-attack that was finished first time from the edge of the area. The third goal arrived shortly afterwards and was arguably the best of the night: a quick combination on the left, a cut-back into the corridor, and a composed finish into the far corner.
To their credit, Arenteiro never folded. They pulled one back with a header from a corner to make it 3-2, and for the final twenty minutes they laid siege to the Antela box. The visitors' goalkeeper made two important saves, a defender cleared off the line, and the hosts struck the frame of the goal in stoppage time before the final whistle confirmed the away win.
Key moments
- Early opener: Antela's wide play stretched Arenteiro's back line and produced the first goal inside the opening quarter of an hour.
- Arenteiro equaliser: A scrappy set-piece goal that briefly shifted the momentum back to the home side.
- Two goals in ten minutes: Antela's quickfire double after half-time was the decisive passage of the match.
- Late pressure: Arenteiro's second goal from a corner set up a tense finish, with a shot against the woodwork in the dying minutes.
Tactical story
The game was a classic clash of styles. Arenteiro wanted the ball, building patiently from the back and looking to overload the flanks with their full-backs. Antela were happy to concede possession in deeper areas, defending in a compact mid-block and then attacking at speed the moment they won it back.
That approach worked perfectly in transition. Both of Antela's second-half goals came from turnovers in the middle third, converted within a handful of passes. Arenteiro's defensive line, pushed high in search of a winner, was repeatedly exposed by direct running in behind.
The hosts' response was to throw more bodies forward, and it nearly rescued a point. But the same aggression that created the late chances also left them vulnerable, and Antela's ability to hold their shape under pressure was the difference between one point and three.
Players who stood out
Antela's centre-forward was the focal point of everything good about the visitors, holding the ball up, running the channels and finishing the opening goal. In midfield, their deep-lying playmaker set the tempo of the counter-attacks and rarely wasted a pass.
For Arenteiro, the captain drove the second-half comeback with a tireless display, while the substitute introduced from the bench added genuine width and directness during the late siege. The home goalkeeper could do little about any of the three goals and made a smart stop of his own early in the second half.
What the result means
The win is a significant one for Antela's season. Away victories against well-established, well-supported opponents are the currency of promotion pus
