Golden State Valkyries Defeat Las Vegas Aces 71-60 in WNBA Defensive Statement

The Golden State Valkyries secured a 71-60 home victory over the Las Vegas Aces on October 5, 2026, delivering one of their most complete defensive performances of the Women's National Basketball Association season. Golden State controlled the tempo from the opening quarter, held the Aces to 60 points, and pulled away in the second half to earn a double-digit win at Chase Center.

With the result, the Valkyries reinforce their place in the Western Conference playoff race, while the Aces are left searching for answers after a road loss to a fellow contender. The final scoreline flattered neither side: Golden State's balanced offense and disciplined help defense were the difference in a game that remained tight for three quarters before the Valkyries closed it out.

Match Overview

Golden State led 37-29 at halftime and never surrendered the advantage after the opening minutes. Las Vegas made a third-quarter push, but the Valkyries responded with a decisive run and protected the lead at the free-throw line in the fourth.

Team	Q1	Q2	Q3	Q4	Final
Golden State Valkyries	19	18	17	17	71
Las Vegas Aces	15	14	16	15	60

The Valkyries improved their home form with a performance built on defense, ball movement, and timely shot-making. The Aces, who entered the game with one of the league's most dangerous offenses, were held well below their usual scoring output.

Key Moments

First-quarter foundation: Golden State opened with a 7-0 run and forced Las Vegas into early contested jump shots. The Valkyries led 19-15 after one quarter.
Second-quarter separation: A 9-2 Valkyries run midway through the period pushed the lead to double digits. Golden State took a 37-29 advantage into halftime.
Third-quarter response: The Aces cut the deficit to 45-41 behind A'ja Wilson and Jackie Young, but Golden State answered with a 10-0 run to regain control.
Fourth-quarter closeout: Las Vegas trimmed the margin to seven points with under five minutes remaining, but the Valkyries made six straight free throws and forced two late turnovers to seal the win.

Standout Players

Golden State's backcourt set the tone on both ends, while Las Vegas leaned heavily on its superstar forward. The Valkyries finished with four players in double figures, a sign of their balanced attack.

Veronica Burton (Golden State): 18 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals. Burton controlled the pace and made several key plays in the fourth quarter.
Kayla Thornton (Golden State): 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks. Thornton's physical defense helped limit Las Vegas inside.
Tiffany Hayes (Golden State): 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists. Hayes provided a steady veteran presence off the wing.
Temi Fagbenle (Golden State): 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks. Fagbenle anchored the paint and contested shots without fouling.
A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas): 24 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks. Wilson was the game's top scorer, but Golden State made her work for every look.
Jackie Young (Las Vegas): 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. Young was the Aces' most efficient perimeter threat.
Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas): 9 points, 7 assists. Gray created chances, but the Aces struggled to convert from three-point range.

Tactical Story

Golden State's coaching staff, led by Natalie Nakase, built a game plan designed to slow Las Vegas in the half court. The Valkyries switched screens aggressively, sent timely double-teams at A'ja Wilson, and dared the Aces' supporting cast to beat them from the perimeter. Las Vegas shot just 5-of-24 from beyond the arc and turned the ball over 16 times, leading to 20 Golden State points.

On offense, the Valkyries attacked the paint early and then kicked out to open shooters when the Aces collapsed. Their 19 assists on 27 made field goals reflected a patient, unselfish approach. Becky Hammon's Aces made adjustments in the third quarter, but Golden State's defensive rebounding and transition control prevented Las Vegas from stringing together enough stops to complete a comeback.

What the Win Means in the WNBA Standings

The victory strengthens Golden State's position in the Western Conference playoff picture and gives the franchise another signature win in its second season. The Valkyries have now shown they can compete with the league's elite teams on the defensive end, a trait that matters greatly in
