The result adds another dramatic chapter to the Liga ACB season and gives Bilbao a confidence boost, while Joventut are left to rue a fourth quarter that slipped away in the final minutes.
Match overview
DKV Joventut 78-81 Bizkaia Bilbao Basket. The final scoreline reflects just how little separated the teams across 40 minutes. Joventut had the edge in spells, particularly when their half-court defense forced Bilbao into late-clock shots, but the visitors stayed composed and made the decisive plays when the game opened up in the final period.
- First quarter: DKV Joventut 20-19 Bilbao Basket
- Second quarter: DKV Joventut 18-22 Bilbao Basket
- Third quarter: DKV Joventut 21-18 Bilbao Basket
- Fourth quarter: DKV Joventut 19-22 Bilbao Basket
How the game unfolded
Joventut started with energy in front of their home crowd, attacking the rim early and getting into the bonus before the midway point of the first quarter. Bilbao responded by tightening their perimeter defense and using their ball movement to create open looks from the corners. The teams traded small runs throughout the second period, with Bilbao briefly opening a four-point cushion before Joventut answered before halftime.
The third quarter was a grinding, possession-by-possession struggle. Joventut’s interior defense improved, and their guards began to find seams in Bilbao’s switching scheme. The hosts reclaimed a narrow lead entering the final ten minutes, setting up a tense finish.
Key moments
The game turned in a two-minute stretch midway through the fourth quarter. Bilbao forced back-to-back turnovers and converted them into transition points, shifting the momentum and forcing Joventut to call timeout. Out of that timeout, the hosts generated a good look from three, but the shot rimmed out, and Bilbao immediately went the other way to extend their advantage.
In the final minute, Joventut had chances to tie the game, but Bilbao’s defensive rebounding held up and their free-throw shooting protected the lead. A late Joventut three cut the deficit to one, but Bilbao answered with composed foul-line shooting to seal the 81-78 win.
Tactical story
Bilbao’s ability to defend without fouling in the closing minutes was the difference. They kept Joventut’s primary ball handlers in front of them and forced contested jump shots rather than allowing clean drives to the basket. On offense, Bilbao’s spacing stretched Joventut’s defense and created second-chance opportunities through timely offensive rebounds.
Joventut won stretches with their physicality inside, but they were hurt by empty possessions in the fourth quarter. Their three-point shooting was streaky, and when Bilbao closed out harder on the perimeter, Joventut struggled to find a consistent answer.
Standout performers
Bilbao’s backcourt set the tone with steady decision-making and timely shot-making, while their frontline controlled the defensive glass in the final period. Joventut’s forwards were effective around the basket for much of the night, but the hosts needed more production from the perimeter to close out the win.
What the result means
The win gives Bilbao an important early-season road result in the Liga ACB standings and reinforces their ability to win close games. For Joventut, the loss is a narrow one that will sting, but the performance showed enough fight to suggest they can bounce back quickly. The head-to-head result also gives Bilbao a useful edge if the teams end up level in the standings later in the campaign.
