Match Info

Belgium Women produced a statement performance on the opening night of the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, defeating a resilient Turkey Women outfit 89–75 in a composed and high-scoring group-stage showdown. In a match that delivered from the first whistle, Belgium’s balance, depth, and sharp outside shooting proved decisive, as they pulled clear when it mattered most and set an early benchmark for their campaign. The Cats arrived in Germany with legitimate medal ambitions, and against Turkey they looked every bit the part. Belgium relied on a fluid offensive system that produced scoring runs from across the floor, while Turkey kept themselves alive with competitive stretches, particularly from the perimeter. But Belgium’s late-game control and defensive stops in the final five minutes turned a slim lead into a comfortable 14-point margin. #### Match Overview: Belgium’s Versatility Wins the Night - **Final Score:** Belgium Women 89–75 Turkey Women - **Date:** September 4, 2026 - **Competition:** FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup – Group Stage - **Home Team:** Belgium Women - **Away Team:** Turkey Women - **Home Win:** Belgium improved to 1–0 to begin their World Cup campaign Belgium entered the game with the pressure of expectation, yet it was their fast starts in both halves that shaped the result. After an opening quarter that required time to settle, Belgium found their rhythm transitioning from defense to offense. Turkey matched them with energy but lacked the bench depth to sustain the pace. Heading into the final frame, Belgium had appeared to take command, but Turkey pushed back one last time, trimming the gap to single digits. That is when Belgium’s experience took over. A key timeout, followed by three consecutive stops and transition baskets, sealed the win and gave the scoreboard its final 89–75 look. #### Key Moments and Tactical Story Belgium’s offense thrived through ball movement and intelligent screening. Their guards penetrated Turkey’s half-court setup and kicked out to open shooters, while the frontcourt generated second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass. Turkey, in turn, leaned on their pick-and-roll actions and tried to exploit mismatches on the low block. - **Second Quarter Spurge:** Belgium broke open a close game with a 12–2 run late in the second quarter, creating a cushion that Turkey continuously chased. - **Third Quarter Defense:** Turkey’s perimeter shooters threatened to pull the game level, but Belgium’s alternated defensive pressure, mixed zone looks, and full-court trapping gave Turkey limited clean looks. - **Closing Sequence:** With under five minutes remaining, Belgium scored on five of six possessions while forcing three turnovers, drawing the final point of the contest. The tactical edge lay firmly with Belgium’s coaching staff. They adjusted their pick-and-roll coverage to push Turkey toward contested mid-range jumpers rather than allowing the paint touches that had generated early Turkish confidence. At the other end, Belgium’s early offense produced high-percentage looks in transition, keeping Turkey’s defense on the back foot for most of the game. #### Standout Players and Performances While the box score was spread across a strong team effort, several performers stood out as catalysts for Belgium’s victory. - **Emma Meesseman’s leadership:** The veteran forward was the anchor, setting screens, facilitating from the high post, and scoring from different levels. Her ability to stretch the floor opened driving lanes for Belgium’s guards. - **Perimeter shooting:** Belgium’s backcourt combined for several clutch three-pointers, with multiple players contributing from distance to push the lead from manageable to decisive. - **Turkish resilience:** Despite the defeat, Turkey showed quality in their backcourt play and kept their composure through stretches of Belgian pressure. Their leading scorer kept the team within reach for most of the third quarter before Belgium’s defense tightened. That defensive intensity became the ultimate difference-maker. Belgium allowed less than 20 points in each of the three quarters after conceding 21 early, but it was their fourth-quarter stand that truly transformed the game. By limiting Turkey to hurried attempts late in the shot clock, Belgium ensured that their offensive output would be enough. #### Context and Table Impact Belgium’s win is significant in the early group-stage picture. With a major rivalry and tough schedule ahead in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, starting with a strong victory against a ranked opponent gives the Cats immediate momentum and an important tiebreaker edge. For Turkey, the loss is far from fatal in a group-stage format that often sends multiple teams through to the knockout rounds. Still, a stronger finish in the closing minutes, particularly in their defensive rotations, will be required in their upcoming matches if they wish to progress deeper into the tournament
