Bakken Bears Hold Off HBK Prievidza 83-78 in FIBA Europe Cup Battle

Bakken Bears secured an 83-78 road win over HBK Prievidza in the FIBA Europe Cup on 28 October 2026, surviving a determined second-half comeback from the hosts. The Danish side built a narrow lead in the first half, extended it in the third quarter, and then made enough plays down the stretch to hold off Prievidza’s late surge.

The five-point margin reflected a hard-fought contest. HBK Prievidza stayed within reach for most of the night and had chances to tie in the final two minutes, but Bakken Bears’ defensive rebounding and free-throw shooting proved decisive. The win gives Bakken an important road result in the group phase.

Match Overview

HBK Prievidza came out with energy, attacking the basket and using their home crowd to fuel an aggressive start. Bakken Bears responded with patient half-court offense, working the ball inside and out to create open looks. The first quarter was tightly contested, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish a significant lead.

The second quarter saw Bakken edge ahead. Their guards found seams in Prievidza’s defense, and their big men controlled the defensive glass. Prievidza stayed close thanks to timely three-point shooting, but Bakken took a narrow lead into halftime.

The third quarter was Bakken’s best stretch. They increased their defensive intensity, forced turnovers, and converted them into quick points. A late run gave the visitors a comfortable cushion heading into the fourth. Prievidza refused to go away, though, and used a spirited fourth-quarter rally to make it a one-possession game in the final minutes.

Key Moments

• Bakken’s third-quarter run: A 9-2 burst gave the visitors their largest lead of the game and forced Prievidza to call timeout.
• Prievidza’s fourth-quarter rally: The hosts cut the deficit to three points with under two minutes remaining, bringing the home crowd to its feet.
• Clutch offensive rebound: Bakken secured a key offensive board late in the game, leading to free throws that extended the lead.
• Final defensive stand: Prievidza had a chance to tie, but Bakken’s perimeter defense forced a contested three-pointer that missed.

Tactical Story

Bakken Bears’ game plan revolved around controlling the paint and limiting second-chance opportunities. Their big men boxed out aggressively, and their guards helped on the defensive glass. That rebounding advantage allowed Bakken to survive Prievidza’s late run and close out the game from the free-throw line.

Offensively, Bakken used ball screens to create mismatches. Their guards attacked the basket when Prievidza switched, and they kicked out to shooters when the defense collapsed. The visitors also took care of the ball for long stretches, limiting Prievidza’s transition opportunities.

HBK Prievidza’s best moments came when they pushed the pace and attacked early in the shot clock. Their three-point shooting kept them in the game, but they struggled to get stops in the third quarter. In the end, Prievidza’s late rally fell just short because they could not secure the crucial defensive rebound when it mattered most.

Standout Performers

Bakken Bears were led by guard Mikkel Nielsen, who scored 19 points and added 5 assists. Nielsen was composed in the fourth quarter, hitting key shots and making smart decisions with the ball. Forward Ryan Martin posted 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Jonas Berg contributed 13 points off the bench.

HBK Prievidza’s Matej Kral finished with 22 points, keeping the hosts in contention with a series of difficult shots. Dexter Smith added 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Peter Novak chipped in with 11 points. Despite their efforts, Prievidza could not complete the comeback.

FIBA Europe Cup Impact

The win gives Bakken Bears a valuable road victory in the FIBA Europe Cup group phase and reinforces their reputation as a disciplined, physical team. Their ability to protect a lead in a hostile environment will be important as the group stage progresses. Bakken will look to build on their rebounding and late-game execution.

HBK Prievidza will take positives from their fightback but will be frustrated by the loss. The hosts showed resilience and shot the ball well enough to win, but defensive rebounding and late-game execution let them down. With the group phase still open, Prievidza must regroup quickly and find a way to turn close games into wins.
